We survived!! Yes! What a learning experience!
700+ cups of coffee served over the weekend! Both coffee stations were about 200m apart and i was walking back and forth at least 10+ times a day catering for the needs of the baristas that were mending the station. What a workout!
We went into the event. Not really knowing what to expect. But overall, I think we learnt a lot from this experience.
There were many interesting incidents worth noting down.
- Coffee station 2 was located under a huge FnB tentage. It was run by a generator. The morning started out fine. There was a long line that was queuing up for coffee. Then……. no power!! The power from the generator was intermittently shutting down. Within 5 mins.. the people were all dispersed and we were frustrated as the machine was also losing heat. Fortunately, the technicians managed to resolve the issue on time. But still precious time was lost. As we know… the demand for coffee peaks in the morning and slowly dwindles down towards lunch time. Kudos to Iskandar who was manning that station. We really made up the coffee servings as soon as the power came back on!
- Money for float. Ah…. This is something new for me. For the first day, I only prepared $40 of change.. 🙂 $10, $5, $2, $1 and $0.50. Haha…. Obviously, it wasn’t enough.. Within 15 mins… The coffee stations was buzzing that there was not enough small change.. lesson learnt. 🙂 fortunately, turf city is just round the corner. I managed to get a few change. But very limited. So I messaged a friend to help bring some small change. Phew!
- Coffee craving and demand is highest between 7+am – 1030am and quickly dwindles as lunch time approaches. I thought that people would transit to cold brew coffee in the afternoon. But my theory did not materialize as cold brew did not sell so well. I think I did not spend enough time on thinking how to sell the cold brew. Just putting them in a Styrofoam box DOES NOT work.. 🙂
I guess that’s about all that I can think of. I would like to thank Centaurs Rugby Club for giving us the opportunity to serve coffee at this yearly rugby tournament. Also to my partner @gentlemenscoffee for helping out with the coffee beans, machine and manpower supply.
We hope to see you again next year!
