Making a good cup of coffee is simple! Just follow these simple rules and you will not go wrong.
1. Use fresh coffee beans (whole beans).
The supermarket is NOT the right place to get fresh beans. So never purchase any coffee beans from the supermarket.
There are so many local coffee roasters around in Singapore now. Most of the cafes also carry fresh coffee beans from their roasters. There are also many online coffee subscription services that will deliver coffee right to your home.
As a rule of thumb, speciality coffee should be consumed within 1 month of its roast date.
2. Invest in a grinder.
You need not invest in an expensive grinder if you are not doing espresso. A simple hand grinder will be a very good choice.
When choosing a grinder. DO NOT choose grinders that uses cutting BLADES. Choose grinders that uses BURRs instead. Burr grinders will grind your coffee beans in a more uniform size vs blade grinders.
So instead of using pre-ground coffee. Get whole beans and use a grinder to grind it just before you want to brew your cup of coffee. The freshness in the cup can be noticed immediately.
3. Storage of coffee beans.
Never store your coffee beans in the freezer. Taking them in and out of the freezer will introduce condensation to the beans. Any moisture introduced is a big no no.
Instead, store the coffee beans in an airtight container. You can also use a ziplock bag. Store the beans in a cool place. Also prevent them from getting direct sunlight.
As a rule, you should consume your coffee beans as soon as you can. So try not to buy a big bag of coffee. Just buy enough for 1 months’ consumption.
4. Water
Almost 95% of the coffee beverage is made of water. So the quality of water will matter. Fortunately, the quality of water in Singapore is very good. So this is not an issue.
I hope that these simple tips will help you brew a great cup of coffee every time!
