Hi peeps!
For today’s post, I would like to touch on the most common question that people ask me when they strike a conversation with me.
The most common question that I get asked is……”Whats the difference between a Flat white, Latte and a Cappuccino?”
So here is my simple answer that I usually give to my customers. Please take note that this is my own interpretation of the 3 beverages.
- The main ingredients of the 3 beverages are the same. That is “Hot Milk + Espresso”
- The first difference to differentiate the 3 beverages is the amount of milk used for preparation. The Latte will have the most amount of milk. Where as the Cappuccino and Flat White will have about equal amounts of milk. To me, when a person asks for a Latte. What he/she is telling me is that he/she wants a “milky” beverage with a coffee taste. So the emphasis is the milk. Whereas if the person is asking for a Flat White or Cappuccino, the person is telling me that he/she wants a coffee beverage with milk. Notice the difference?
- The second difference between the 3 beverages is its foam texture. The Flat White will have the “least” amount of foam. The Latte will have “more” foam than the Flat White and the Cappuccino will the “most” amount of foam. Again, all these are relative and it also depends on the Barista that is making the beverage.
In a cafe environment, it will be easier to differentiate these 3 beverages as they are usually served in different cups/glasses. These different cups/glasses ALSO dictates the amount of milk being used.
So here you have it! This is my simple interpretation of the 3 different beverages. Coffee snobs, please do not slam me!
Hope this helps!
